How satisfied are customers with German financial institutions? Which branches score particularly high in reviews – and where is there room for improvement? The new “hypt Report – Banking Germany 2025”, created in collaboration with the Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz (FHNW), provides the first comprehensive analysis of 18,610 branches of German banks based on their Google reviews – and highlights why excelling in online reviews is more crucial than ever in the age of Artificial Intelligence.

Google reviews have long been a decisive factor in how banks are perceived. 97 percent of consumers trust online reviews, and younger generations actively incorporate them into their financial decisions.

"Online reviews support a company’s credibility and build trust, as consumers rely on the experiences of others to make purchasing decisions" Prof. Dr. Marc K. Peter

Especially in the age of Artificial Intelligence, publicly available data such as Google reviews shape the visibility of financial institutions – both in search engines and in large language models like ChatGPT. LLMs are trained on a wide variety of freely accessible data, including customer reviews.

Financial institutions need to take action

70 percent of the branches analyzed have fewer than 25 reviews – far too few to provide a reliable assessment of customer satisfaction. However, where sufficient reviews exist, they are predominantly positive – a clear indicator of active review management.

"Companies should actively invite their customers to share their experiences in order to generate a high number of online reviews and build their online reputation" Prof. Dr. Marc K. Peter.

The report categorizes financial institutions by sector and number of branches, highlighting which institutions perform particularly well. The analysis makes it clear: Google reviews hold enormous potential that German banks have so far only partially tapped. Many branches have too few reviews – a missed opportunity to strengthen customer trust, increase visibility on Google and AI systems like ChatGPT, and significantly reduce customer acquisition costs.

The top-performing institutions demonstrate that actively engaging satisfied existing customers can successfully unlock this potential.
